The Magic Bullet?

Rating:

Review date: 02-22-2016

Description:  Have you ever been asked or possibly asked someone " well what is the magic color or pattern to use?"? Lets think for a second here, how should we answer that, or better yet do I have the correct answer.  Whether your in the Salt or fresh, river or lake, pond or inlet there will always be go to color patterns and also go to baits that work in certain area's. We all know the fly fishing term of match the hatch which in most places and cases is a fail proof plan to get you into some fish. We all have favorite's that we tend to lean towards and what I often refer to as confident baits. An example may be a U 20 Flatfish in Silver or pearl. If you fish the lure enough you know the perfect speed for the action and running depth and over time will just catch fish on them as you feel comfortable with it.Every once in a awhile you may tie on a Frog pattern or your teenage know it all brings along a glow in the dark "RAVE Party" pattern and claims it to be the hottest new color on planet teenager. Truth ...

Shimano Stella

Rating:

Review date: 11-24-2015

Description:          Stella.  What is a Stella? Well, in the fishing industry the Shimano Stella is the Rolex of spinning reels. Built with all the technological engineering advances you could expect from a company grounded in fishing and the cycling industry. You could imagine how happy I was to receive and get a chance to check this reel out and see if it was really worth the expensive price tag of $799.99.  Yep, that\'s just for the reel.  Could it be that much better than my favorite Shimano reel, the Stradic ci4? The Stella is priced at 5 times the cost, could it be 5 times better?

A Need For Speed

Rating:

Review date: 06-18-2014

Description:         Over the last decade I have come across three different techniques where a high speed bait casting reel would come in handy while fishing for trout.  Casting large swim bait and minnow type lures for brown trout would be the first.  When casting from shore I must admit most time I prefer a spinning reel, but when I\'m casting from a boat with a 8" lure on 12 pound line, nothing beats a low profile round reel.  Secondly, vertical jigging deepwater lake trout.  The ability to put your thumb on the spool and control the speed of descent is essential.  If you detect a hit ...

Jensen Flash Fly!

Rating:

Review date: 04-22-2014

Description:  While many River Anglers are well versed in flies, not nearly as many Lake anglers and especially Trollers think to use flies. A proven tactic in Northern waters that harbor large Kamloop and Gerrard Rainbows anglers often fish trolling flies behind side planers, behind Dodgers and flashers or simply fish them solo with a steady pump and go action.  Many variations are out there from 2 inch standard Wooly Buggers style to 4 inch larger Frisky Jenny and 10 salt water Alf flies. Truth be told any streamer style fly will work and using them with weight, leaded line or attractors on flat line or down riggers will bring action on all species of Trout. I really like the Jensen Flash Fly for large Browns and Lakers as the small composite head is similar to Salt Water tuna clones with pass through hole to tie in. I use a glow bead to sit atop the knot at the hooks and the mylar has tremendous flash. Just a little bullet weight slipped in will allow it to be fished in 3 to 10 ft of water and if deeper the leaded line option is a great way to reach deeper water. When fished ...

Review date: 04-16-2014

Description:      I\'m a firm believer of the right tool for the job. Over the years my fishing techniques have adapted into letting the fish tell me what they want rather than trying to force them into striking a lure that they\'re not interested in.  Each technique requires different tools.  So let us talk about an essential tool ; the fishing rod. When I\'m  fishing I take a bunch of rods out on the lake with me. ...

Gomame Jig

Rating:

Review date: 02-06-2014

Description:  Williamson is a brand that falls within the Normark Group with the like of Rapala, Storm, VMC, Sufix, Luhr Jensen, Trigger x and several other industry leading brands. During the past 3 seasons we gave experimented with the Williamson metal jigs and quickly transferred over to them exclusively. The color schemes, different models, and actions simply out perform all other brands.  This review is to focus in on the Williamson Gomame jig.  Offered in 7 foil finish colors arraying from natural patterns to attention getter and in weights from roughly 3/4 of an ounce to 1.75 ounce they are perfect for shallow water jigging or for casting and retrieving. They have a slight s mold to them that provided an undeniable wounded however action however you choose to fish them. When we use them in Tahoe we rerig the hook to VMC sure set hook and tip the long hook with a minnow. This adds a tail action to the lure along with a natural scent that the fish cannot resist. We typically fish them in water less than 80ft often looking for pockets of schooled fish and start by fishing the edges of the schools and watching the sonar to see the ...
